Starting out as a writer can be overwhelming. It’s a combination of knowledge and networking. Figuring out where to start paralyzes some writers and their future as a freelancer withers on the vine along with their dreams. That doesn’t have to be the case.
Breaking the process down into small chunks can make things much less stressful and can keep the dream alive. Concentrate on one area at a time. Do you feel that you need to sharpen your writing skills? Take a course or two. Do you need to build up your writing portfolio? Find a website or even charity that will let you write something for them.
Networking is also an important part of freelancing. Make each and every relationship important. You never know who will be the next editor or writer to offer you a writing job. Also, make sure that you are on time or early when it comes to deadlines.
Even if you are writing for free, it is important that no one can have anything negative to say about your work ethic. That editor on the website you are writing for today may be the editor of a magazine or publishing house you are submitting to in the future. Editors are people and the negative seems to stick in peoples mind a lot longer than the positive.
Confidence is very important, even for the first time writer. You may feel obligated to say that you have never been published before, but if they don’t ask, don’ tell them. If you are a good writer, that should speak for you and overcome any experience you might lack.
