A writer who sets a great work of fiction in a fantasy realm can simply make up everything. No research required. Right? Wrong! Find out why every writer has to research.

Want to write it? Better know it! This isn’t just a pat way of saying that writers need to research -- it’s the absolute truth. Even in settings that are entirely fictional, novels that have no real basis in reality or plots that are set far, far into the future, every writer has to research.

It’s an inescapable fact. Writers have the job of making the world entertaining through story telling, educating with their marvelous words. But there’s much more to the job of writing than just plot creation, character embellishments and great dialogue. Learn why every writer has to research - no matter what they might be writing.

Research Before Writing!

Want to write it? Then know it. Even in stories that are set in fantastical lands, completely made up settings, there will be details the writer has to research in order to give the tale more depth. Want to describe a certain kind of tree? Different varieties of food? The way the wind blows or why the rain falls? Want to write about making coffee, baking bread or splitting logs? Do the research, and add a whole new element of description to the writing in question. Through research, writers can imbue any tale with the visceral details that bring any story or article to life.

Many writers choose to use their own experiences, thoughts and feelings to craft a realistic tale, article or blog post that others will want to read. Through research, even things the writer themselves has never experienced (or known much about) can be displayed in authoritative detail. This makes any piece of writing richer and more real to its audience.

Every Writer Has to Research

It’s easy to confuse facts, dates and details even on subjects that are fairly well-known or already well understood by the writer. Every writer has to research - even those bits of information the writer thinks they already know quite well. Remember that readers are going to expect professional, well-written words that have some basis in the truth. Even fictional stories have some reality in the depth of feeling they describe, in the events and characters. Research makes every piece of writing richer…and isn’t that what the readers really deserve?

Every writer has to research, not simply to check facts and events they depict but to offer something real to their readers. Want to bring a story, an article, a blog post to life? Then research the information and describe it. Isn’t that what writers do?
