There is nothing like being a winner to boost your self esteem. We are all attracted to winners. The Detroit Tigers have nearly 20 years of horrible baseball, yet they ge

Would you like to be encouraged and possibly even rewarded for your writing? There is nothing better for this than entering a writing contest. It helps you develop many good habits and skills and could even line your wallet.

Writing Contests Fine Tune Your Writing

One of the best benefits from entering a writing contest is that you get to work on some things that will help you in the publishing world. You will learn to write to a deadline. Getting used to this is very important no matter if you are writing a novel or a magazine article. All publishers have very tight schedules. Proving that you can write to a deadline will help you enormously.

Writing contests usually have some kind of word limit. Learning to write within that word limit helps you understand that every word needs to earn its place. Most publishers have specific word limits, especially magazines. Sharpening the skill to pare down a story will do nothing but help your writing.

Writing To An Audience

When you write anything, it’s best to have an audience in mind. While that statement may be obvious, it is something many people struggle with. Writing to a particular audience makes your piece clear and concise.

The beauty of the writing contest is it helps you to hone that skill. Each writing contest you enter will have you keep a certain audience in mind. It will also have a certain theme or topic, helping you to learn how to focus your writing.

A great way to practice this, and stretch yourself, is to enter different contests with varying themes and audiences. You can enter a contest that has you writing mystery stories for children and then enter another that asks for comedy geared to adults. You’ll have some fun and might even surprise yourself.

The Most Obvious Benefit of Writing Contests

The more you write, the better you write. By entering writing contests, you will be practicing your craft and fine tuning your skills. You may be entering a writing contest to try and make some extra money. You may just want an accolade to boost your confidence. Regardless of the reason you enter, the biggest benefit is that you become a better writer.

So if you are not as good now as you will be next year, what’s the point, right? Why even try if there is always someone better than you out there? That should inspire you to carry on and improve. By entering contests you will become a better writer. You will move up and eventually be the one that’s better than most. So what are you waiting for? You just might surprise yourself.
