For the writer or aspiring writer who wishes to connect with others and study the craft of creative writing, there are a number of online programs to consider.

Many writers decide to connect with other writers and learn the craft by participating in an online program. With so many programs to choose from, it’s hard to know how to select one that best meets a writer's needs. There are a few key factors to consider that will help make the choice easier.

The Cost of the Program:

Many online program available to writers are free. These are usually conducted as a sort of peer group. Writers join and agree to critique other members works in exchange for critiques of their own work.

On the other end of the spectrum, there are writing programs online that cost as much as a college or university course. Indeed, some colleges and universities offer creative writing courses online. While these courses may stretch one's budget, the quality of the writing tends to be higher because people are more motivated when they pay for something. Also, the instructors for these courses are likely published themselves and often hold advanced degrees.

If budgetary concerns are an issue, a compromise might be to begin participation in a free or low-cost program while saving to participate in a more advanced course at a later time.

The Focus of the Program:

All writing is not the same. Some people love poetry, but have very little interest in novel writing. Or perhaps someone is more interested in screenwriting than fiction writing. Doing a little research to see where a given program places its focus will ensure the opportunity to work on the writing of interest. A mystery writer might not be very happy in a group predominated by writers of romance.

Some courses are very global and may be best for novices who are only beginning to learn the craft of writing. Other courses are more narrowly focused on specific topics such as writing natural dialogue and developing characters. Knowing one's strengths and weaknesses as a writer can make it easier to decide which program will address those areas that need improvement.

The Skill Level of the Participants:

There are also different degrees of skill level. Members of writing groups vary in terms of experience. Some of the members will be published writers while others will be complete novices. The quality of the critiques, like the quality of the writing, will vary greatly.

Where to Find Out More:

The Poets and Writers Magazine is an excellent resource to find mentors, the residency MFA programs, and various conferences and workshops held throughout the country. Many of these programs also offer an online component.
