This free web application allows writers to write and edit their projects on any computer with internet access, and also offers an iPhone app for more convenience.

Whether it's freelance writing or composing a novel, it is difficult to find a block of time to sit down and turn out thousands of words all at once. Although this is what most writers aim for, sometimes the only way to get a good daily word count is by sneaking in a small amount when a few minutes of spare time comes up.

Many writers use Google Docs for this reason, as a project can be accessed and edited from any computer with internet access. My Writing Nook takes this idea one step further by offering both a web and iPhone application, so writers can work on their projects anywhere with WiFi and an iPhone or iPod Touch.

Edit Projects Online: My Writing Nook Web Application

My Writing Nook is a web application that uses Google's App Engine infrastructure to keep data safe and accessible through the user's Google log-in information. There is no fee and no registration – just sign in and start writing!

The application is very similar to using Google Docs, with a clean, minimalist appearance that makes writing distraction-free. A short tutorial shows the user all of the features, which include:

  • Autosave, Manual Save, and Revert to Last Save
  • Back-up options by email or by downloading the document
  • Hide sidebar to completely clear the screen and focus on writing
  • View word count for individual documents and the total, handy for seeing the progress of a novel if each document is a scene or chapter
  • Easy-to-use Dictionary and Thesaurus to search for words
  • Shortcuts for save, new document, sidebar toggle, and jumps to the beginning and end of a document

The My Writing Nook web application is free, and a great way to access a project on any computer.

Write and Edit on the iPhone: My Writing Nook iPhone Application

For writers who own an iPhone or iPod Touch, My Writing Nook makes it even easier to work on a project while on the go. The companion iPhone app includes many of the same features as the web app, incuding autosave, word count, and a dictionary/thesaurus.

In addition, syncing documents edited on the iPhone or Touch is as easy as one tap! With the iPod Touch, WiFi access is necessary in order to sync and update.

My Writing Nook for iPhone uses the standard touch screen keyboard. The user also has the option of typing in landscape mode, which allows the thumbs to do more of the work.

For novelists attempting NaNoWriMo, this is a great way to get in those extra words! The My Writing Nook iPhone App is available on iTunes for only $1.99.

Increase Daily Word Count With My Writing Nook

While finding a large block of time to write is ideal, everyone has days where time seems to fly by, with no time to write. With access to projects on the iPhone, or on any computer with internet access, the writer opens up more opportunities to write.

My Writing Nook allows writers to jot down ideas and work on their articles and novels during breaks, while waiting in line, or when access to their laptop is simply impossible. This is a great way for writers to increase their daily word count bit by bit.
