There are lots of government grants, contests and financial aid options for freelance writers...so why aren't more professionals using them?

Writers can get free money! This is a little-known fact that many freelancers know nothing about, but a rare few have learned how to find the assistance they require in times of great financial need. Struggling to make ends meet in today’s troubled, unstable economic times? Finding that health insurance bill a little more intolerable than usual? Learn more about government grants, writing contests and other financial aid programs that might help.

How to Get Free Money

There is free money out there for writers who find themselves in a financial bind. Writing contests, government grants and other assistance programs can provide a much-needed boost in times of financial trouble. There are other programs in place which can assist freelancers in establishing a new business, going to school or undertaking another expensive endeavor. But where are they?

Financial Help for Freelance Writers

Looking for a little free money? Remember that everything costs something; in this case, time. It will take some effort for freelance writers to find the programs, grants, contests, etc. It will take even more time to apply for this aid and to wait for a response. However, this effort can be well worth the payoff when making money becomes more and more difficult.

  • Government grants. Grants are a good way to get a little monetary boost when freelance writing alone isn’t paying all the bills. Before applying, be sure to read all the requirements and application procedures very carefully.

  • Writing contests. Though some writing contests charge an entry fee (obviously not an option for cash-strapped freelancers), others are free to enter. Winning a writing contest doesn’t just come with a monetary reward - it also gives a writer a little bit of cachet to enjoy and something else to put on the resume.

  • Financial aid. Some institutions exist merely to help others, providing much-needed funds in times of financial trouble. Seek out these programs and read application requirements; sometimes, these charitable organizations can provide much-needed help.

How to Make More Money Freelancing

Grants, contest earnings and other assistance programs will only serve for so long in times of financial trouble. Freelance writers will need to explore more stable ways to make money if they find themselves in a financial crunch. Look for new markets, search for submission guidelines and re-double all writing and money-making efforts. There are opportunities out there – sometimes, it just takes a little extra work to actually find them.
