Dec 4, 2008 Sarah Turner

A subscription to a good writers' magazine will keep your writer happy all year long. The Writer, Mslexia, and others provide writing inspiration and advice.

What better gift for the writer in your life than a magazine subscription that shows up on their doorstep, reminding them to get back to writing?

Here are some of the most popular writing magazines out there. Better yet, head down to your local bookstore or library and browse until you find one you like.

The Writer Magazine

[12 issues, $32.95 US]

Great magazine for writers at any stage of their career. The most recent issue had a special section about “Finding Time to Write” - something most writers can relate to.

The Writer offers a nice balance between business-related articles and inspiring tips to get creative juices flowing. There are also great technical articles about specific writing problems.

Quill & Quire

[12 issues, $59.95 CAD]

Quill & Quire is “Canada's magazine of book news and reviews.” It provides an up-to-date record of who's doing what in the publishing world. For writers who are seriously looking to get published, this is important reading.

Since it's intended for people involved in the book trade, it is not really a how-to magazine for writers. The magazine publishes interviews with Canadian authors, book reviews, and bestseller lists.

Poets & Writers Magazine

[Six issues per year, $14.97 US]

According to their website,Poets & Writers publishes essays on the literary life and interviews with contemporary writers of poetry, fiction, and creative nonfiction.” It also offers info on writing grants, courses and competitions.

Poets & Writers is a good choice for more experienced writers. The articles tend to go into greater depth and present many sides of the writing life. Big names featured recently include Toni Morrison and John Updike.

For the price, it's hard to go wrong. The publication tends to be a little ad-heavy but contains enough useful material to make up for it.

Mslexia

[Four issues a year, $57 CAD (£30)]

Though it only publishes female writers, Mslexia is valuable for any writer. The magazine is packed with helpful information about writing and the business of freelancing, as well as interviews with big names like Isabelle Allende and Diana Wynne Jones.

Mslexia features book reviews and examples of fresh writing by women. Each issue has a current directory about contests, submission requests, grants, writing conferences and more.

Since it's a British magazine it is more expensive for North American subscribers than local magazines are, but the quality and the novelty make it a worthy investment.

Zoetrope: All-Story

[Four issues per year, $24 US]

Zoetrope: All-Story publishes fresh and exciting fiction. It prints established writers like Gabriel Garcia Marquez alongside emerging new writers. It was founded in 1997 by Francis Ford Coppola and includes essays on fiction and film.

The magazine is big and thick-paged, like gourmet fare for those used to regular mags. Each issue features a new guest designer. The current issue is designed by graphic artist Marjane Satrapi.

While not specifically a 'writer's magazine,' anyone interested in innovative fiction, narrative and design layout will enjoy Zoetrope: All-Story.

Writers Digest Magazine

[Six issues per year, 19.96 $US]

Writers Digest is a generalist magazine about the trade. It offers articles specific to different genres, information on how to break into the freelancing business, and grammar pointers. Each issue features an interview with a fairly successful writer, whether a poet, script writer or novelist.

It also provides updates on the latest technology and software for writers. This magazine is good for writers who are just starting out, or those who are interested in writing technology.

Literary Magazine Subscriptions

If you don't think your writer would like a technical magazine, why not give her some examples of great writing? Canadian literary journals like Event, Arc and Prism are filled with high-quality writing from well-known and emerging writers.
