Spring is almost here and that means new beginnings. Here are five easy things a writer can do to overcome writer's block and get creative inspiration.

Do you feel overwhelmed by writer's block? Overcoming it doesn't need to be difficult. Try these five inspiring tips and soon you will be on your way to writing once again.

Take a Walk to Inspire Your Writing

Take advantage of the pleasant spring weather and go on a long walk. Getting away from your writing desk and experiencing a change of scenery can have a rejuvenating effect. Write about the things you see around you, whether they be natural or urban elements.

Take a Picture for an Easy Creative Writing Prompt

Approach your writing from a different angle and take a picture of something you find appealing, or even unappealing. Don't think too much about it before you take the photograph and don't think of it in relation to your writing. After you've taken the photo, write about it. Describe the subject or write about the conditions in which you took the photo. Sometimes using your creativity in a different way can help in overcoming your writer's block.

Make a Story out of Random Words

Look around you right now and jot down five to ten items you see. Keep these notes to one word each - "chair" rather than "blue chair." Now write a story using all of these five to ten words. The story can be as short or as long as you like, but be sure to use all the words. This exercise can be modified by adding a colour you see or a sound you hear. Another easy modification to this writing prompt is to change locations as you are making your list.

Turn to the News for Story Ideas

Any newspaper is full of great stories, but due to the fast-paced nature of delivering the news, many of these stories are not resolved. Pick a story out of your newspaper and write what happens after the events of the article. Write what happens before the events of the article. Use a newspaper article to draw inspiration for a story topic or character.

Write a Dialogue to Develop Your Characters

Character development is vital to a good story. If you have a character that you are having problems developing, one way to help strengthen their personality is to build up their voice. Pretend you, as the writer, are in your story or novel and write a dialogue between you and your problem character. Discuss your own struggles with the character and let the character reveal his or her own issues. It might sound far-fetched, but it is a unique way to develop your character's personality and voice, while helping you to understand where you can improve.
