Attempting to complete a 50,000 word novel in the span of a month is no easy feat. Here are some suggestions that will increase the free time a writer has available.

During the month of November, time is not on National Novel Writing Month participants' side, as they work furiously to complete their novels. However, it is possible to find more time to write, both at home and at work.

Finding More Time to Write at Home

Writers may want to record their favorite weekly TV shows so they can view them at a more convenient time. This will enable them to write in the evening and not miss their favorite programs.

Writers can enlist the help of responsible caretakers to watch their children for just a few hours a week. This will result in the opportunity for writing time without distractions.

Writers may also want to try going to bed an hour later or setting the alarm clock for an hour earlier. This will yield more writing time without cutting into regularly scheduled events.

Writers can also carve out more writing time to work on their NaNoWriMo manuscript by limiting the social activities they participate in during the month of November.

It may be helpful to distribute a writing schedule to family and friends so they know what times and days are off limits for socializing.

Finding More Time to Write at Work

If a writer commutes to work using public transportation, this time can be utilized for working on their writing, either by using a laptop or writing longhand.

While at work, writers can use one of their allotted breaks to work on their NaNoWriMo manuscripts. They can also plan to take their lunches to work during November and eat at their desks. Then the rest of their lunch break could be used for writing.

If a writer uses company issued equipment to work on their writing, they need to be aware that doing so could be against company policy and may warrant a reprimand. It may be tempting to write when things are slow at work, but it could get back to a manager or supervisor who doesn't share a love of the written word. It is better to be cautious than unemployed.

Writers may want to consider taking a few vacation or personal days off of work during NaNoWriMo. This will enable them to write for longer periods during the work week without worrying about neglecting their job responsibilities. Devoting several consecutive hours to writing can boost productivity.

Writers who make NaNoWriMo a priority in their life will find the time to write, no matter what scheduling or work conflicts are thrown into their path.
